Tawnya Tiskus

Tiskus, Tanya

I became part of the WHS English Language Arts department in the fall of 2003 after making a decision to leave the field of Information Technology.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Massachusetts in 1992. From 1994 to 2003, I worked in various IT positions, the last at Amherst College as the Manager of Information Systems for Alumni & Parent Programs.  During my first career, I also found myself devoting more time to volunteer organizations such as Girl Scouts and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.  This led me to recognize how much I enjoyed working with young people. I set a new direction and  earned my Master’s degree in Education in 2003. I like to combine my interests in traditional instruction of reading and writing with newer technologies such as online blogging, digital presentations and, more recently, the flipped classroom.

In 2010, I was honored to receive the Pioneer Valley Teaching Excellence Award for Westfield High School. In the spirit of this recognition, I began studying to become a National Board Certified Teacher and I achieved this certification in November of 2014.

In my free time, I pursue writing and music projects, read voraciously and continue to volunteer for both The Teachers’ Loft and the Girl Scouts of Western & Central Massachusetts. I live in Easthampton with my husband, Mike, and one petite brindle cat, Sadie.
